Learn4Life Schools provide educational success to Metro Atlanta youth from birth through careers. They are locally controlled, tuition-free schools that provide students with flexibility and one-on-one attention.
Learn4Life School typically enrolls students who are minorities, socio-economically disadvantaged, and aged out of high school (Learn4Life can serve up to age 22). Many are also teen parents or have adult responsibilities like work or caring for family members.
What We Do
Learn4Life High Schools offer one-on-one instruction and flexible scheduling, meeting once or twice each week with students’ supervising teachers to complete work packets they take home to finish. Students enrolling at Learn4Life schools often hope to catch up on credits faster and complete graduation faster than if attending traditional schools.
Grossmont and San Diego Unified had sued Learn4Life schools for operating without authorization from their districts, but a 2017 judgment found they complied with state law by closing and reopening sites under different names with similar charters and curricula. Unfortunately, a 2019 decision reversed this finding but claimed that Learn4Life schools weren’t sufficiently other than their predecessors with similar names to comply with state law.
Local BSA councils manage the day-to-day administration of Learning for Life and Exploring programs through either a committee of national Learning for Life volunteers or, more often, certified executive officers who are BSA-commissioned professionals. Nationally, there is a leadership team, various specialized committees responsible for curriculum creation and national program implementation, and senior executives offering advice and support to Learn4Life field offices nationwide.
About Us
Learn4Life Charter Schools offer flexibility, one-on-one attention, and experiential learning experiences for students who have dropped out or fallen behind academically. Students work on their own time at their own pace while attending resource centers where teachers provide help when necessary.
Learn4Life claims it reaches approximately 49,000 students every year, and 89% are successful, either catching up on credits needed to graduate with their peers or continuing towards obtaining their diplomas through Learn4Life. In addition, Learn4Life partners with organizations such as Reach Out and Read and Vision To Learn in providing mobile vision clinics at schools.
Learn4Life employees are dedicated to creating an inclusive work and learning environment free from discrimination or harassment based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, economic status, or citizenship status. As a nonprofit organization, Learn4Life welcomes all newcomers.
Learn4Life is funded by several wealthy individuals and is affiliated with the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools, led by one of its leaders, Greg Bordo – an attorney at this organization – as its leader. At first, he defended Helgeson by asserting that any deal with Charter School Capital occurred before starting Learn4Life, but when Voice of San Diego requested proof that Helgeson divested his interest from Charter School Capital before joining Learn4Life – Bordo could not produce evidence of any deal or its terms.
Admissions
Learn4Life schools provide personalized education, career training, and life skills. Each school is locally run and tuition-free to give students the flexibility and one-on-one attention necessary for success, unlike charter schools, which often charge expensive tuition and employ exclusionary application processes.
This program seeks to empower students as independent thinkers prepared for college and careers. Working alongside local community partners, this organization advances cradle-to-career education across Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties as part of a collective effort between school systems, communities, businesses, and nonprofits.

Learning 4 Life is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people overcome obstacles in their pursuit of academic success. They connect students to both on and off-campus resources, working to build or strengthen support networks and assist with overcoming any barriers, such as housing or food insecurity, that stand in their way.
Financial Aid
Learn4life provides scholarships for college students who require assistance affording their education due to financial restrictions or family responsibilities such as caring for children or elderly relatives at home. In addition, Learn4life assists applicants with filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), required to be eligible for government financial aid such as grants and loans.
Learn4Life schools are charter schools, each operating independently from each other. Local communities or nonprofits run some, while others are under state oversight. Many serve disadvantaged youth, leading to lower than average four-year graduation rates; however, these alternative schools don’t face as harsh a critique because their attendance of at-risk students makes up such a substantial proportion of their enrollments.
Rafael spent every weekday and most weekends finishing packets that covered his missing A-G courses, often turning to noncredentialed tutors for assistance in some of the more difficult subjects. He worried that he might not finish in time to apply to universities.
Learn4Life schools are inspired by the Exploring program Boy Scouts of America (BSA) offers. While these independent schools share a name with BSA programs, they do not adhere to traditional Scouting methods like taking an Oath or Law pledge and are open to boys and girls ages 10-18.
